Additional notes on Piazzi's catalog ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Issues with Bayer / Flamsteed / Lacaille letter designations. This list was partly computer-generated by comparing piazzi.dat against ident.dat and taking into account the letter assigments given by Flamsteed and Lacaille in their respective catalogs. The origin of the letters (Bayer, Flamsteed, Lacaille) are indicated in the ORIG column. Each issue is classified in one of three rough categories: + could be: a letter designation exists for the star but the catalog omitted it or superseded it with another designation (Flamsteed, Hevelius, Lacaille, Zodiacal, Mayer), + should be: the designation is imperfect in one aspect or another, sometimes explained in the comment, and a more correct designation is supplied, + suspect: the designation does not seem belong to the star, for a more or less benign reason explained in the comment. Many of the uncommented "should be" issues consist of a confusion between similar letters (such as gamma and nu) or the use of the wrong case for a letter. There are also instances of the "wrong" constellation being used, often in a legitimate way (Antinous for Aquila, Pleiades for Taurus, Navis for Puppis or Vela). Bayer and Lacaille's letter designations did not use indexes originally. The indexes assigned to some of them in the list are the ones currently in use.
